Cedar Chest Memories
I had a cedar chest once upon a time. Actually it didn’t really belong to me. It belonged to my mother, and her mother before her, and her mother before her. It was a timeless tradition in left over into a world were traditions are being forsaken. This cedar chest may have held treasures, but none were equal to the treasure of the cedar chest itself.
I remember the way that cedar chest felt. The smooth, sleek and glossy sheen was always cool to my touch even on the hottest day of summer. It seemed like that old trunk was impervious to any external influence. It was timeless and eternal in its regal appearance, standing tall and proud at the end of the bed I spent my life sleeping in. The grain of the wood was a design created by the hand of God, it seemed as if the core of this tree had been his canvas and Van Gogh would weep with envy at his creation. If you looked hard enough you could see the swirls of natural color came together in what looked, for all intents and purposes, like the face of a little old man in the bottom left corner of the lid.
There was a keyhole, although I don’t remember there ever being a key. The trunk was never locked. I lived under the threat of my mother’s wrath to serve as the only deterrent it that I needed to keep from opening it. Occasionally I opened it anyway. Inside were the treasures of my ancestors. There was a blanket that my great-grandmother sewed by hand while my great grandfather was in the war. It surrounded the photographs of family that I had never met. These old nameless photographs told stories that I already knew by heart. Pictures of Aunts and Uncles surrounded by cousins as children, and then again as young adults with the dates that would later become spouses were stacked on top of Christmases that were too old for me to be a part of. One day all of these pictures would be a scrapbook, Momma said, after all of her children were grown and gone.
This cedar chest was a treasure that had never been buried. It was, for me, a culmination of all of the memories that once existed only in my Grandma’s mind. Even the trunk itself was a memory. Great-Grandpa made it himself in his wood shed. I often imagined his hands stroking the very same wood that I caressed on those stolen glimpses into the past. He breathed in the fragrance of this wood that still smelled so smoky sweet to me. His hands sanded and stained the surface before they applied the lacquer that gave it the slickness that would slide me off of the top when I sat on it. This cedar chest was in my bloodline, of my bloodline, and for the future of my bloodline to appreciate and enjoy.
