Cedar Siding – A Great Look For Any Home
First of all let me be the first to say congratulations on your choice of cedar siding to complete your house. Of all of the different options available to choose from for home exteriors this is by far the most beneficial and beautiful. This product is recognizable for its insulation value, light weight, and stability, not to mention its unique appearance. There are many other benefits to encapsulating your home in cedar, but installation is most definitely a significant advantage in itself. Thankfully for all do-it-yourselfers around the world cedar siding is as easy to install as cedar panels for a closet.
There are four different styles to cedar siding, bevel siding, tongue and grove siding, lap siding, and board and batten siding. Each different kind of cedar siding requires a different application method. There are however a few things that these all have in common. All of the styles require sheathing as a base, building paper covering the sheathing, and rim shank nails that will penetrate the siding and the wood sheathing (at least 1 ½”). The rest of the installation is just a matter of following these steps.
Step 1 Space the Siding Just as with the cedar closets the siding panels must be laid out beforehand in order to properly prepare for application. Siding panels will overlap in a bevel siding application, and since this is the application we are referring to the following steps will be in reference to it. There are tables available that will help you determine how many boards will fit between the soffit and the foundation. Once you know this number you should lay out the panels to determine the amount of overlap needed to make the entire application even.
Step 2 Application of the Siding Contrary to what you would think, with beveled cedar siding you always start at the bottom. You have to use a furring strip to support the bottom edge. With bevel siding you should face nail the panels to the studs with the nails you have purchased. The length of these nails allows for 1 ¼” of the nail free for penetration into the sheathing. These nails are placed on the cedar siding at 24” intervals without nailing through the overlap of any two pieces. Each package contains instructions for the dimensions of the overlaps and spacing for the expansions clearances.
Step 3 Corners on the Siding Although some professional choose to use mitered corners this may not be the solution for all homeowners. Corner boards are the most frequent alternative to mitered corners. There are options available for width and thickness. The corner boards are nailed to the corner studs that will anchor the wood with a maintenance free joint.
